Everyone in Tucson knows this fruit stand on the corner of Speedway & 6th. I imagine that everyone's parents (and grandparents!) have shopped here. Tourists love it. For part of the year it's boarded up and looks totally abandoned and then - boom - they are open again for another season. Ruby red grapefruit, oranges, dates, honey, pistachios.... they've got it all. And they also have a machine for making keys should you need to get a spare while you're sampling their cider.
Hey Steffe, Thx for your question! The current owner, Larry Green, has operated this stand since 1962 when he took it over from the previous owner. Larry & his wife Joanie actually live behind the fruit stand - so they have a pretty short commute! (:

I'm a transplanted New Yorker who loves the Tucson climate. On New Year's Day I have a bit of fun calling my (snowbound) east coast friends to announce that I'm drinking coffee while sitting on my patio. (:
Has it always been owned by the same family, and who is that man in the stand, the current owner?

ReplyDeleteOh wow, I haven't seen a stand like this in ages.
ReplyDeleteI love that place! It is so interesting the way it closes up and then re-appears every year. thanks for posting this!
