Tucson's nearby Kitt Peak Observatory is home to the world's largest solar telescope. Its 110-foot tower focuses sunlight down a 200-foot-long diagonal light shaft that extends 50 vertical meters into the mountain, reflecting off a series of mirrors to give an 85-centimeter-wide image of the sun.
