Tucson's Fantastic Day of the Dead Parade

Each year Tucson hosts a fun, creative, and amazing event - the All Souls Procession. People gather to honor departed loved ones and to revel in extraordinary costumes. The procession extends for miles and culminates in a spectacular finale with fire & flames.

NOW:
The Festival is celebrating its 28th year! WOW! Stay tuned for tomorrow's posting of two participants from the 2017 celebration.

Beautiful Thoughts Worth Recycling ~
When I was thinking
tonight of what to post next I remembered that I intended to post this poem on
January 1st of this year and I totally forgot. Here it is again - 6 years later and even
more powerful than the last time I read it. Please again enjoy the TDP post
from January 1, 2010.
The start of a new year inspires and motivates many of us to do better, be better, live better. This photo of Tucson's first dawn in 2010 - a soft pink & purple masterpiece - brought a poem to mind that I hope you enjoy. The concept is extraordinary. The poet is Lisel Mueller.

Refuses the Operation
Doctor, you say there are no haloes
around the streetlights in Paris
and what I see is an aberration
caused by old age, an affliction.
I tell you it has taken me all my life
to arrive at the vision of gas lamps as angels,
to soften and blur and finally banish
the edges you regret I don't see,
to learn that the line I called the horizon
does not exist and sky and water,
so long apart, are the same state of being.
Fifty-four years before I could see
Rouen cathedral is built
of parallel shafts of sun,
and now you want to restore
my youthful errors: fixed
notions of top and bottom,
the illusion of three-dimensional space,
wisteria separate from the bridge it covers.
What can I say to convince you
the Houses of Parliament dissolves
night after night to become
the fluid dream of the Thames?
I will not return to a universe
of objects that don't know each other,
as if islands were not the lost children
of one great continent. The world
is flux, and light becomes what it touches,
becomes water, lilies on water,
above and below water,
becomes lilac and mauve and yellow
and white and cerulean lamps,
small fists passing sunlight
so quickly to one another
that it would take long, streaming hair
inside my brush to catch it.
To paint the speed of light!
Our weighted shapes, these verticals,
burn to mix with air and change our bones,
skin, clothes to gases.
Doctor,
if only you could see
how heaven pulls earth into its arms
and how infinitely the heart expands
to claim this world, blue vapor without end.

to claim this world, blue vapor without end.

Tucson Throwback Thursday - 2010
Sometimes on these random Throwback Thursday posts I am showing things/places that have disappeared since they first appeared on this site. Happily, this one reminds us that you can always count on Tucson's weather to be a source of pleasure!
Here's the post caption from 2010: Here is a cool duo for you to enjoy! On my morning walk I saw the full moon to the west and the sunrise to the east.

Tucson is truly a winter wonderland ~
Because we get a huge snowfall so rarely, many Tucsonans rush to capture the landscape transformation in photographs. I am so happy to share this beautiful portfolio of images that have been submitted by local residents. Sunrise, sunset, snow on mesquite trees, and vivid purple violets blooming in spite of it all... Enjoy! Huge thanks to Karen Lustig and Rhonda Spencer for sharing their images of Tucson-in-the-Snow.

Tucson's Big Sky ~
We are having unusual weather - rain, cold temperatures, and...HAIL! A storm came in right before dawn and delivered a huge amount of rain along with that distinctive clicking clattering sound of ice pellets pummeling the roof. It was mostly gone by first light and this photo shows the storm quickly moving out of the area.
