Dog Day ~ a day at the races

A sports tradition in Tucson for more than 60 years, Tucson Greyhound Park provides live dog racing and also offers off track betting for other dog and horse races across the country.

  1. They are wonderful dogs, and well known as the "45 MPH couch potatoes" as they really do just like to sleep on the couch or a nice soft bed...

  2. Why glorify greyhound racing?
Do you have any clue how many dogs break their legs and hocks here even in this day and age?
Do you have any clue how many dogs disappeared from here in 2005-2006 never to be found again?
My neighbor who is in his early 60s used to be a handler while in high school. Every time he sees me walk my hounds, he says he has flashbacks of what they did to the dogs back then a long time ago.
There are many beautiful sites in Tucson, dog racing is not one of them.

  3. Look at the bright side of this: nothing was glorified (read the blog) or ignored, and it gave someone a chance to post information about greyhound rescue. I just wonder what kind of comments would appear if, for example, a picture of the mission was posted...

  4. Thanks for the comments. My point in posting the dog park wasn't to glorify racing; it was just to illustrate another aspect of Tucson's past and present.

  5. This is a piece of Tucson's history. And I have heard that the park is not doing well and will close - maybe even this year. I hope that someone can think of a good use for that big arena and that it doesn't sit vacant.

  6. My father said this once was a fancy place with a private clubhouse. What does the inside look like now?

  7. When you walk into the place it's a bit like walking into the past, but it's pretty much empty and lifeless these days. The clubhouse is closed for renovation (says the sign), but I doubt that it has a future. Looks like it was rather grand at one time, but dead and dying now, for better or for worse.

  8. The place is a dump. Last year when they had a fire 20 patrons and 30 employees were on the premises. Dogs still break their legs and hocks and run into the rail to be electrocuted.

The mission is a beautiful place, the white dove of the desert. No greyhounds have died there.

  9. Oh Shelly (your name is posted), if you want to talk about "Beautiful Places" then maybe you should do a little bit more research about such things. Yes, no greyhounds died at the "Mission", or at any concentration camp, for that matter. There are lots of "dumps" in Tucson (Bite Your Tougue!), so maybe YOU SHOULD GET THAT PLACE CLOSED DOWN IF YOU ARE HURT BY IT, instead of just whining about pictures and blogs that are posted on the internet. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IF IF YOU REALLY REALLY CARE!!!
