Tucson's leaning towers ~

Stationed at all 4 corners of Houghton and Golf Links Road are these chunky ribbed stone pillars topped with rusted metal caps. They all lean a bit - kind of like barrel cacti - although I doubt if that was intentional! This public art project is supposed to represent Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. All comments welcome! (:

  1. I'll have to look for these when I come out in February!

  2. I definitely support public art projects and generally find some merit in the pieces. These, however, dunno. At first I wondered if there was an actual artist involved in this quartet of columns then I googled it and saw that Herb Stratford "designed" them. Ugh! Looks more like some concrete cylinders were left over from the intersection construction and someone decided to cap them off. They look big and clunky. Definitely not one of Pima Arts Council's better efforts - IMHO.

  3. I tend to agree with "Anonymous" on these pieces of "art." But at least they are not all spray painted with gang symbols! That's a good thing.

  4. As in the movie with Bruce Willis...I wonder what, or who (!) the "Fifth Element" is?

  5. Man, I hate to criticize a fellow artist but jeez - Herb Stratford had a chance to make memorable totems here and these concrete cylinders was the best he could do? Lame.
