I'm back with an exciting announcement!

OMG! Check her out! Here is Tucson's cutest newest resident! My friend's mare had this foal 10 days ago and today was a naming party for her! Her mom's name is "Casper" so I suggested "Ghost Girl." I think she is just about the sweetest little girl on the planet! Awwww. More photos tomorrow!

In addition to the fine rooster posted on Monday, Phil at Copper Country Antiques has also added this patriotic giraffe to his menagerie. This tall one is also currently without a proper moniker. Ideas, anyone? Red, white, & blue - how about SAM?

NOW: Sadly, Copper Country Antiques and its wonderful shops and cafe and kooky animals are all gone now. The business closed in January of 2016 and the building remains vacant. Here's the news story with more details.  

Another of Tucson's great T's ~

If you have recently been on the site you know that we are taking a virtual Alphabet Tour to showcase some of Tucson's greatest things and places using MY FAVORITE THINGS as the guide. 

Today is Day 11 and we are on the letter T. Tanque Verde Guest Ranch offers a true dude ranch experience and combines rustic Western-style charm with comfort. Even if you are not a guest there you can enjoy the restaurant and the Dog House Saloon. This is the West at its best!

Ghosts of Christmas Past ~

When I first glanced at these reindeer I thought, "Whoa there. It's only October! Not Christmas decoration time YET!" but then I looked a little closer and by the rust on these little Rudolphs it is clear that these are year-round decor for this house! I guess these folks decorate once every decade or so....   (:

Here is the 2nd photo in my series of "Hoof & Roof" in Tucson. For your viewing pleasure is this mighty big cow on the porch roof of the OK Corral Restaurant. Big surprise - the house specialty is steak, steak, steak. Rustic Western atmosphere.

UPDATE: This beefy restaurant has closed but I believe this hefty fellow remains on the roof! 

Tucson's Pegasus ~

In addition to yesterday's beautiful flying carpets, here is yet another way to fly out of Tucson's Airport - on the mythical winged horse, Pegasus! This handsome sculpture is the creation of Barbara Jo McLaughlin and was a gift from the employees of Sundt Corporation.

It's that time again! Where is this?

The 1st of a new series... Hoof & Roof

Here is the post from 6 years ago today. Already 2 of the 3 animals are gone from the Tucson landscape. There's no more OK Corral Restaurant and no more Fred the Buffalo at Copper Country Antiques.  ):

As I was driving on Oracle Road I spotted this life-size elk on top of - what else? - the Tucson Elks Club Lodge. It got me to thinking about how many other animals there are around town that maintain a rooftop lookout. All suggestions are appreciated. My list so far includes the cow at OK Corral Restaurant, the horse at OK Feed, and Fred the Bison at Copper Country Antiques. What others am I missing?

Fred, Tucson's Favorite Buffalo, says Goodbye!

An icon in Tucson for many years, Fred, the dapper and beloved buffalo perched atop Copper Country Antiques on Speedway, is leaving town. The store's owner, Phillip Gaillard, has closed the fun and funky antiques mall and will move to Dallas. Click here for a video clip of Phillip riding Fred as a crane lifts them from the store's roof to the parking lot. Goodbye, Fred! We will miss you and your fantastic costumes!

Here's a Horse of a Different Color ~

I drive by this store occasionally and it seemed to me that very recently their horse was black. When I stopped in to verify that they gave him a paint job I learned that in 20+ years he has only been painted four times. This horse has been standing on the roof of the OK Feed Store for decades!

Snoozing Cat ~

This big sleepy fellow is on the roof of a veterinarian's office on Harrison Rd near Golf Links. You can't tell from the photo but his whiskers that touch the building are made of metal! Fun! And even though he has paws (not hoofs/hooves), I'm including him in the "Hoof Roof Series" - he is on a roof, after all!

Rudolph's equine cousin, Black Beauty ~

Maybe it's because we rarely get snow but it seems like everyone gets into the spirit of decorating for the season in Tucson. Here we have an equine Rudolph - check out the added on red nose! This Santa-hatted black beauty is on the roof of a feed store on Ft Lowell.

Flying high horse ~

OK, this horse isn't technically on a roof but I'm adding him as the sixth addition to the "Hoof on Roof" series anyway. You can admire this beauty in front of the Vista Feed & Supply store on Sahuarita Road.

Tucson's biggest black cat ~

If you were a mouse in THIS neighborhood, you should be afraid - be very afraid. This 10' long cat looks hungry and ready to pounce from this rooftop. Of all the black cats in the world Tucson can boast that it has one with an orange striped tail. Oh yes, and an orange nose. Meow!

Meet Fred ~ the fourth

As the fourth in my "Hoof on Roof" series meet wonderful Fred, the colorful, interesting, dapper bison mascot of Copper Country Antiques. These folks always do up the holidays in a big way so stand by for what Fred wears for Halloween....

Tucson's red coyote ~

Something to howl about for sure ~ a happy red coyote is the mascot for a thrift store on Speedway. I'm posting this fellow as the 3rd in my "Hoof on Roof" series (even though this one is technically "Paws on Roof"). (: Don't miss his patriotic bandana!
