Hitting the bottle??

If the situation in Washington, DC is getting on your nerves, let me suggest a little adult refreshment! And here to celebrate wine in a BIG WAY is one of Tucson's most beloved icons - the Boondocks Chianti Bottle! Did you know that the cork topper is real cork? Boondocks has been a blues music hangout in Tucson for decades. It came under new ownership in 2017.

25 Scientists, Thousands of Experiments

A walk on the University of Arizona's mall reveals many pieces of interesting public art. Here is a portion of George Greenamyer's steel sculpture, "25 Scientists" at the entrance to the Henry Koffler Building.

Tall Cowboy ~

That's a mighty tall cowboy standing sentry at the Hacienda del Sol Resort! And it looks like he has a big heart....    :)   (Yes, the Tucson sky really is that blue!)

Dried Fruit ~ aka Proboscidea Paraviflora :)

This devil's claw is rendered in epic proportions in this striking cast bronze sculpture ("Large Devil's Claw") by Spencer Kane Edgerton. It is placed on the grounds of Hacienda del Sol Resort in Tucson, on loan from the R Kessler Collection. To learn more about this flowering Southwest plant and its fruit, go here

More than the sum of its parts ~

What looks like a motley collection of machine parts and sheet metal has been transformed into an interesting sculpture of a human head by this artist. This piece is part of the large collection of sculpture on display throughout the grounds of Tucson's Hacienda del Sol Resort. Interesting!

Botanical Couple ~

These gorgeous bronze sculptures by Robert J Wick incorporate living plants into them which connects them in a profound way to their surroundings. At the moment the Tucson Botanical Gardens has a number of these pieces throughout the grounds. The exhibit was scheduled to end on June 30 but the installation is still in place - for how much longer, I don't know. Magical!

Stairway to Paradise...

You may remember the iconic "Stairway to Paradise" as sung and danced in American in Paris. Ah,  yes, the lighted pink staircase! Go here to refresh your memory! Here is a modern sculptor's vision of that same voyage as seen on the grounds of Hacienda del Sol Resort in Tucson, AZ.

What is this?

Recently I attended a conference held at the beautiful Hacienda del Sol Resort. As regular visitors to this site know, I love outdoor/public art and this spectacular mirrored creation certainly caught my eye!

Unfortunately, the resort does not supply an attribution to their collection of art (and that is REALLY TOO BAD!!!) so I don't know the artist or the title. Anyone want to make something up to suggest a name for this piece? I will share what one of the resort staffers calls it: "Upside Down Bowling Pin" - which is just as good a name as any!

This fun and fantastic Robot Mailbox is a wonderful piece of yard art. Check out the golf clubs legs! Love it!

Tucson's Bas Relief Godzilla ~

THEN: This oversized lizard stands guard on a residential garden wall that faces Broadway. What fun!
NOW:  He is still on guard, watching the traffic pass on Broadway. Still fun!

Rare Albino Javelina ~

Spotted roaming on the grounds of the Tucson Botanical Gardens...  part of Mykl Wells's "Luminous" exhibit. Wonderful!

Dragon-sized Dragonfly ~

This huge and magical dragonfly sculpture is part of the "Luminous" exhibit at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. The artist who created this group of fantasy creatures is Mykl Wells, a local sculptor. Show closes on Jan 6.

On the prowl ~

This fantastic, larger-than-life size coyote is on the prowl at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. The coyote is part of a exhibit designed and created by local artist Mykl Wells. The sculptures are scattered throughout the grounds - both placed on the ground and some are suspended from the trees. It is a magical show that ends on January 6 so hurry!

Magical Night View ~

Today you see another angle and another type of lighting for the wonderful Mare and Foal sculpture on Houghton Road. Yesterday's view was full-on daylight (with Santa hat!). Here you see the pair lighted at night. They glow!

Merry Christmas! Have a wonderful day!

Festive Foal!

I'm reposting this photo from December, 2016 because this year no one decorated the foal for the holidays (or, SIGH, someone stole the hat). Hope your day is filled with friends, food, and festivity!

This is one of my all time favorite pieces of public art/sculpture in Tucson! A grazing mare and her sweet foal reside in the median on Houghton Road just north of Old Spanish Trail. And you have to love that someone gave the little foal a Santa hat!!! Artist team was Lauri Slenning, Ben Olmstead, and Simon Donovan.

Unity ~

You can see this sculpture, "Unity," at E Grant Road and N 3rd Avenue. The scultptors, Simon Donovan and Ben Olmstead, created this using parallel steel plates that give the sculpture a light, almost invisible quality as you circle it.

Lifesize Last Supper ~

Over the many years that I have been posting Tucson photos I have come back to this "Garden of Gethsemane" many times. Sometimes the scultpures of Jesus and the apostles are smashed and in disrepair; sometimes they look fantastic. This image is about as good as it gets! Whomever did the recent restoration did an awesome job. Want to know more about this oddity? Click here.
